Kurta Shirt
Is it wrong for people to wear cultural fashions when they're not a part of the culture?
I feel sort of strange wearing clothes or accessories traditionally worn by people in a certain culture or group. For example, I saw a cute t-shirt while shopping yesterday that had a Native American man on it. I thought about buying it, but I wasn't sure if it was appropriate for a white girl like me to be wearing something like that. I have a Native American friend and wouldn't want to offend her, or anyone else, in any way. What about wearing a rosary as an accessory? Just as a necklace worn with a little black dress or even just to school. Or a kimono...or wearing something like this:

Is it offensive to the cultures who traditionally wear these things? Or would they appreciate me liking them?
The issue of cultural appropriation is very complicated and I personally don't think there's any one answer that fits every situation. There are many factors that can be used to decide whether or not a situation is culturally appropriative and unacceptable. For example, in the case of something like a kimono...why is the person wearing a kimono? Is the person wearing the kimono properly? If there are Japanese or Japanese-Americans around, are they wearing kimono? If not, why? White people have privilege and in many situations, they can get away with wearing something that other people can't. And of course, not every member of a particular ethnic group (or religion, in the case of something like a rosary) is going to have the same opinions on whether or not something is okay. Personally, I would say that if you have doubts about whether or not something is okay, don't do it until you know for a fact that it would be fine. And while you're at it, you could do a little research on cultural appropriation (Google is wonderful for this) and form your own opinions on the matter. There is no one right answer. The best you can do is educate yourself and decide from there.
