What to wear with a corset?

The other day I saw a lovely little blue velvet corset, and as its my birthday soon, and i like velvet I thought I could make an outfit with it for my party. Thing is I'm not quite sure with to wear with it without it looking too barmaid, slutty, or gothic, as that's really not my style at all. I was thinking an oriental style embroidered kimono jacket type thing? but then I wasn't sure what to wear on my legs, Shorts? as the jackets quite drapey, a skirt could look awkward...
Any help and advice is appreciated! and visual examples are helpful!
Unfortunatley there are no pictures online of the corset, its a kinda navy blue velvet abit like this:

It may not be how I've imagined but I think a knee length grey or white pencil skirt or dark color skinny jeans would be good.
If you are conscious of being too revealing, try wearing a simple top under it and wear with skinny jeans.

A shrug / a vest / an unbuttoned jacket would be nice without covering too much of the nice corset too.
