Kameez Cotton
Please tell me what you think?
This is a poem about Indian Class society.
I sit at my desk, pen in hand
Waiting for the start of a new day.
That’s when I see her; her Salwaar Kameez blazing orange.
She reaches out to me through the window, waving as she picks the cotton.
I watch her in her work,
The silken cloth flows like a river from her shoulders,
But the teacher shouts and I straighten up,
As she bends low into the barren field.
Again she looks; gazing longingly into
A world into which she doesn’t belong.
She has no sense of wealth,
But I don’t mind – my school can’t buy beauty.
And as the sun goes down on her day and mine,
She returns to her home behind the train track.
Glimpsing the river one last time I know
That she is India.
