what type of crystalline solid would best suit a material that conducts electricity when molten?
Ice
It's easily obtainable, inexpensive and not toxic. Perfect 
Don't use deionized water though, wouldn't work.

Thumbs down? Ice is a crystalline solid. If you melt it, It becomes a conductor.
